Posters - PR History - Old PR Map
In the Map PR is called 'Porto Rico' - an focuses on the US
Virgin Islands. We estimate the map is from the 1920's.
It includes Vieques and Mona Islands.
The raw level of detail of altitude seems to imply a continous
chain of mountains from Maricao-Adjusntas-Cayey-Humacao and then
a jump to El Yunque. This is quite correct.
It even names the 'Sierra de Humacao' which is little known these days,
but it is part of a large number of significant mountains that surround and
are very close to El Yunque range - with Naguabo in the middle.
Actually the now large city of Caguas is surrounded by some of those
mountains. When you cross them you see a large number of large
boulders just like El Yunque, but mostly deforested.
An interesting observation is that this flat gap between El Yunque and The
Sierra of Humacao (or Naguabo) is were Hurricane Maria entered PR in
9/20/2017. After this gap there is still a lowland (Jumcos) between El Yunque and
the other Sierra de Humacao next to it, were the hurricane force could
easily move.
Like any force the hurricane will seek that path of least resistance.
