US Print: Horizontal Framed Premium Gallery Wrap Canvas - Paradise in Puerto Rico - The East Peak range of El Yunque National Forest
From this angle the domes are not visible - we are seeing the edge of the range, behind is the trail to El Toro peak - a 3 hr amazing trail that is open after Maria from PR 186. We see also the scars from Hurricane Maria and the beautiful farms nearby.
This image is on 2019-20 after Maria in 2017 - the forest has recovered pretty well, from the road PR 53 expressway - which goes across the entire El Yunque range and very close to the East Peak. This is a very changing landscape - it can vary a lot with seasons, storms and angles.
In this image we see too how close is development getting to the parks edges...very worrying!
Even worse is the Palmas del Mar resort development - not far and huge, and some more...
With an altitude of 1,055 m (3,461 feet) it is one of the 4 top peaks of El Yunque.
Since it is the closest to the ocean it receives an endless stream of clouds and rain - over 200 inches of rain per year. It can be feets of rain if a hurricane comes close...
There is a road to the peak, a 2-lane road. built for the US Navy in the 60's for 2 large radar domes linked to operations in the US Roosevelt Roads base - now all closed and abandoned. One radar dome is visible here. There are also radar and telecom systems now for civil aviation.
In the closer images we see sections of rock from the mountains - these were razed clean by Hurricane Maria 140 mph up to 220 mph at times that decimated El Yunque's canopy.
Maybe because of that USN history the USFS has kept the road as a preserve and it is closed to the public, but one may still walk up if lucky - about a 2.5 exciting walk. Hardly anyone in PR knows this road - it has been an open secret for a long time. The entrance is near the end of the PR 191 and the large 'Closed Road' sign gives the secret site. This is not the same as the gate at the end of the road PR 191 but it is very close, to the left side going down.
The valley next to it is the Naguabo - Ceiba region is it is one of the most GREEN regions of
Puerto Rico - a real paradise with lots of rain, rainbows and low population except for cows.
